Full stops can be interchanged with equivalent pieces of punctuation
such as question marks (?), exclamation marks (!) and ellipsis (...).
Ellipsis is not normally used in academic engineering writing unless it is used to indicate that a section has been cut from a quotation and is often placed in square brackets [ ] for this purpose.
Commas can be interchanged with parentheses
(brackets) and dashes; however both of these are slightly longer pauses than commas.
Dashes and exclamation marks are not usually used in formal academic
writing as they give an impression of hyperbole or exaggeration.
